So, today is the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, and we are making a conscientious effort to celebrate the liturgical year more in our home. What that might look like for this particular feast kinda stumped me, but I eventually came up with the idea of spaghetti. You know, because both Peter and Paul died in Rome, and meatballs kind of look like rocks ("You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church"). The spaghetti noodles were supposed to look like swords, to remind us that Paul was the defender of the Gospel after his conversion. Shaky. I know. But the kids really went along with it, and we had a really great discussion at dinner. I was feeling really good about things. They're getting it!! They're getting it!!
Then Reagan looks down at her plate, and says ....
"So what does the cucumber mean?"
Uhhhhh. Nothing. Eat your veggies. Lesson over for the day.

Aspirations
Reagan: "Mom, when I grow up I want my own state."
Mom: "Your own state? What do you mean?"
Reagan: "My own state. Like Michigan."
Mom: "Uhhhhhh, I don't know about that."
Reagan: "I want to be President!"
Mom: "OH, that's what you're trying to say. I get it."
That's a new one. Normally she says she wants to grow up to be an architect or an artist.
Mom: "Well, if you study and work hard, maybe you can grow up to be President...."
Reagan (interrupting me): "of CHINA!"
Oh. Well. Maybe not. Never mind.

You're Breaking My Heart.....
Little Miss was eating breakfast with me this morning, and asked me what our plans were for the day. R:"Maybe you could teach me how to sew! Maybe we could play games!" M: "Well, actually, I have to go to work." Reagan groaned. R: "Let me guess. You have to work ALL DAY. Until 8 o'clock." M: "Yes." R: "This work is getting out of hand!" M: "Yes." R: "You need to retire!" M: "Yes. Yes I do." OH, how I wish I could stay home and teach the little girl how to sew and play games with her today!!!
Little Mama
Reagan likes to be "IN CHARGE" of the boys, which they really appreciate (not). She relishes in repeating whatever demands I may have put on them, loudly and authoritatively... as in "Boys, go brush your teeth. Mom says." I have to admit that I've encouraged this behavior on occasion ("Reagan, go tell your brothers that it's time for dinner.") but on the whole, it's a trait that leads to yelling and chaos and eventual tears ("You're not the boss of me!")
It really is getting out of hand. Sometimes I'll be sitting right there when Reagan goes into Bossypants mode.
Mom: "Reagan, stop. I'm right here. I'm the Mom, you're not."
Reagan: "But I need to PRACTICE, because someday I will be the mom!!"
hee hee hee. She's a planner and a perfectionist, that little thing.
